Mostly, with Haute Couture, you see a lot of uninspiring gowns over-embellished with glitz, bling, bells and whistles striving for the attention of the mega-rich or high-profile types who are the main clients for this multi-buck, minute, artisanal segment of the fashion industry. Yawn.
Sometimes, more fun to my mind, there’s a whole bunch of crazy stalking the runway as the occasional independently-minded (and funded, usually) designer puts together an outre vision for us to admire/laugh at depending on your own aesthetic. I’ve gotta say that I do like some giggles with my Couture.
Rarely do you see seriously wearable clothing for grown-ups with a brain and a sense of style who want to project both without discomfort of fit or flesh.
Understated style, I think we might call it and Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior does it a lot. And, lo, we now have Claire Waight Keller with her first Haute Collection for Givenchy.
There’s so much to like about it. So much indeed that I struggle to choose a favourite.
Fabulous cut; monochrome palette; striking without ostentation; seriously wearable investment dressing that might be worn with a pair of trainers as easily as stiletto heels.
Fabulous in a totally good way, if rather too expensive for most (all?) of us.
Be still my beating heart but, perchance to dream … 🖤
