If Haute Couture has an everyday function, it must surely be that of inspiring and delighting those of us who love beauty. Whether you’d wear it or can afford it really isn’t the point of the party, is it?
Sure, sure, there’s an obvious marketing statement to be made as well as reference to the consumer market, on the one level, but it is also a show of art, creativity and inspiration given as free a rein as the fashion world allows and made available to us all.
I think of it as the staging of an exhibition and view much as I would the latest at the Tate or any other art gallery. Thank you to the miracles of the digital age which has made every art form, including the Haute Couture shows, so much more widely accessible.
For me, this week, the Valentino Haute Show, by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, was just exquisite and, by a mile, my overall pick for the fabulous crown. I could drone on about workmanship, style, detail, shape, colour, concept etc. but, really, the collection speaks for itself. Beautiful. Anyone else love this as much as me?
