LFW: Anticipating Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh in The Sunday Tmes

My most eagerly anticipated collection from London Fashion Week (LFW) is that of Gareth Pugh.

I encourage anyone interested in fashion and/or fashion photography to take a look at one of the most unique and awe-inspiring contemporary designers around today and his collaboration with photographer Nick Cave.

Do read last week’s Sunday Times Style magazine (STSM) where Gareth Pugh is featured in Mister fantastic, an article looking forward to Pugh’s LFW return.  I snapped the photo above, shot by Nick Cave of SHOWstudio on my iPad reading it.

I absolutely love the wild, inspired creativity that Pugh brings to everything he does though, be warned, as The STSM says,  ‘if it’s rainbows and tea dresses a girl’s after, Pugh is not your go-to’.  Mister Fantastic is a really interesting read for those of us with a more academic approach to fashion and an interest in the story behind the pictures but it is sheltered by a paywall.  If you are tempted, quotes below from the STSM, you’ll have to subscribe:

… The big luxury conglomerates have approached Pugh, of course. In 2009, it was rumoured he would head up Dior Homme. “I would never say no, but I am very aware that when those brands come to you, they are buying everything you’ve done, and that is precious to me. I would rather no one told me what to do. For 10 years, I’ve done this my own way.” He is not overly interested in accessories, fashion’s big money spinner, and every season he does a variation on the same boot …

Indeed, while he is capable of taking the helm at one of the great houses, Pugh hesitates at the thought. “Look at Viktor & Rolf. They obviously sell, but not in amazing quantities. What they have is an incredibly successful perfume, and that enables them to have an important presence and do interesting things like an opera, these great shows in Paris couture. What I want is that freedom. The greatest aspiration for me is freedom.”

More accessible information on Pugh’s collaborations with Nick Cave of  SHOWstudios, will be found by clicking this link: Gareth Pugh: Ten Years. Editorial, video, slideshows.  Fabulous.

A quick Youtube search will bring up videos on previous Gareth Pugh collections some of which are just amazing. I adored the Autumn/Winter 2013 collection which I featured on this blog at the time: A-line Inspiration…

I’ve added, below, some examples of other images by Gareth Pugh that I have featured previously here.  I cannot wait to see what Gareth Pugh brings to the LFW party this year …

Mmmm …. he’s clearly not following the trend to healthier (looking) models! I want to love the collection, but the first two runway images above feature terrifyingly thin women. I find myself haunted/shocked by the model, not the clothes!

I agree with the above comment. the design of the clothes are stunning I love the shapes and the mix of textures in the designs. i just wounder how the line of the clothes would fall if they were being worn by real womenn with curves
