I have just pre-ordered Bold, Beautiful and Damned: The World of 1980’s Fashion Illustrator, Tony Viramontes by Dean Rhys Morgan. If you don’t know his work, check out Blouin ArtInfo:
Perhaps no other artist encapsulates the new-wave Zeitgeist of the neon eighties like the late fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes. On August 30th, just in time for New York Fashion Week, his punchy post-punk antics are coming to tony Fifth Avenue. In anticipation of the launch of “Bold, Beautiful, and Damned” (Laurence King, October 2013), the first monograph devoted to the illustrator’s work, Bergdorf Goodman will unveil a suite of Viramontes-inspired window displays.
With the book publication imminent, there’s a lot of internet buzz on Tony Viramontes right now – a quick Google search will direct you to more info, should you wish it. Would love to be in New York to see Bergdorfs’ windows but will have to make-do with reading the book and maybe flicking through some of my old Vogues from the era. Viramontes career, like many others at the time, was cut tragically short by the then incurable Aids virus. So sad.
The book would make a lovely gift for anyone interested in fashion illustration – never too soon to be thinking Chistmas (!) – and I’ve included more examples of his work below. Nice, no?
In Milan, at Carla Sozzani Gallery, the exhibition “TONY VIRAMONTES: bold, beautiful and damned”.
On my blog a post about this art exhibition:
