Starving Child and Vulture, 1993, photographer Kevin Carter, for Time Magazine, is just one of one hundred featured in the Time 100Photos: the most influential photos of all time project.
It is a distressing and powerful image as are most with the capacity to make us stop, think and do something to change the world and how we live in it.
Two quotes from Kevin Carter, on this photograph for which he won a Pulitzer:
“This is my most successful image after 10 years of taking pictures, but I do not hang it on my wall. I hate it.”
And then, from July 1994, when, unable to shake off the darkness of his experiences, he took his own life. He wrote:
“I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain.”
I encourage you to click across to the Time100 site where you may see, and explore the history of, all the wonderful photographs.
I’ve spent a few hours there today and it still doesn’t seem like long enough. Brilliant project and website.
